    5 Awesome Stoner Movies

by Andy Andersen February 2, 2023
Curious what movie to watch when you’re a bit stoney? Check out our list of 5 awesome stoner movies here.

Even if you’ve smoked a single joint in your life, you’ve probably seen at least one stoner movie. Maybe it was Pineapple Express or Half Baked. Perhaps it was, Dude, Where’s My Car? or Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. With all this stoner culture out there. You’d think there’d be hundreds of great stoner movies to choose from.

The thing is that most of these movies aren’t actually stoner movies. Sure, they may have someone smoking bud in the scene or maybe one or two puffs from what might be a joint. However, that alone doesn’t make something a stoner movie. After countless hours watching almost every popular movie we’ve put together a list of actual stoner movies for stoney individuals. So let’s get started.

    Number one, Reefer Madness.

This 1936 film is the original stoner movie. It’s a cautionary tale, warning people about the dangers of marijuana use with a few musical numbers thrown in for good measure. The acting is terrible and very dated, but it’s still worth watching If you like to laugh at bad acting or want to see how times have changed since the 1930s.

Number two, Cheech and Chong’s up in smoke.

Starring Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong play as a pair of stoners who accidentally wind up driving a van made entirely out of marijuana across the border. The movie is a classic, but it’s best viewed when you’re high. That way you can appreciate all the little jokes about getting high and being stoned all day long. It’s also worth noting that this movie spawned two major sequels that are just as funny as the original.

    Number three, Half Baked.

When a member of their crew gets arrested for killing a New York City police horse by feeding a junk food, three slacking stoners are forced to get off their butts and raise bail by selling pot stolen from a pharmaceutical lab. It’s a risky plan, but that’s what best friends do, right?

    Number four, Pineapple Express.

Starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, Pineapple Express follows the misadventures of a processor and his marijuana bud dealer friend after Seth Rogen witnesses a murder while on a weed run. The film is considered a classic of the stoner comedy genre and features some of the most memorable cannabis smoking scenes in recent cinematic history.

    Number five, Friday.

Ice Cube, who co-wrote the script and a brilliant Chris Tucker star in this classic about a one day in the life of two friends, one of whom got fired and one of whom owns money to a local bud dealer. Then they get into a bunch of shenanigans. You don’t see too much smoking bud or stony graphics, but it’s definitely a stoner movie.

These movies have been a part of culture for as long as one can remember. They’re timeless classics that you can watch over and over again and never get tired of them. That’s why they are some of the best stoner movies out there.

The 420-Friendly Guide to Exploring Orange County

by Andy Andersen July 21, 2021

Orange County doesn’t exactly have a reputation as the most laid-back area in SoCal, but it’s also home to a thriving legal cannabis market and a diverse collection of cities, hangouts, nature spots, and entertainment for a pretty lit stoner’s day out. Whether you’re looking to chill at the beach, enjoy the “trippier” side of an OC theme park, or take an entire canna-centric tour of the area (consumption included), there’s plenty out there to fill the hours of a 420-friendly outing. So without further adieu, here’s your helpful stoner’s guide to chillin’ in Orange County.

Note: Many of the activities and locations in this guide may still be closed or operating under different hours due to COVID-19 restrictions. Before you plan a visit to any of those locations, practice due diligence and look ahead to see if COVID regulations still apply.

    Consumption Laws in Orange County

When planning out and executing your 420 activities in Orange County, always bear in mind that public consumption of cannabis is prohibited in the state of California. Consumption is only allowed in private residences or privately-owned spaces that are permitted to host cannabis consumption. Possession and use of cannabis are also prohibited on federal lands in California.

As of January 1 2018, California residents 21 and over may legally carry up to 1 oz or 28.5 g of marijuana for personal use. 8 g of hashish or concentrated cannabis are also allowed for personal carry and use.

Laws and regulations for cannabis possession and consumption vary between local jurisdictions in Orange County. When planning out your 420-centric activities, research and make sure you’re fully aware of what’s legal and what isn’t in localized areas.

Where to Buy Weed in Orange County

    Image

Your best bet for acquiring quality cannabis products in Orange County is through a viable weed delivery service. Grassdoor delivers to select zip codes in Los Angeles and Orange County with an ever-expanding region of delivery. All you have to do is enter your address at grassdoor.com to see if you’re in the zone.

Grassdoor carefully selects flower from an elite network of growers in California. The Grassdoor menu also includes Pax, Select, and Stiiizy vape products, as well as a quality stock of edibles and concentrates. However you need to stock up for a successful 420 experience in Orange County, the Grassdoor menu will always cover you.

Grassdoor accepts orders from 9:30 am – 10 pm, 365 days a year, so plan your orders accordingly. In addition to ordering from the handy ASAP menu, you can order from the Grassdoor schedule delivery menu for same-day delivery as long as you place your order before 2:00 pm in the available time slots. Any order placed after 2:00 pm will be placed as a next-day delivery.

    Where to Consume

As previously suggested, be aware of local regulations and your surroundings when planning your cannabis consumption. Orange County is home to a surprising variety of nature spots, ocean-side views, and other popular locations to vibe at between private sessions.

    Cannabis Tours OC

If you’re newer to cannabis and looking for a safe, easy, all-inclusive canna-centric Orange County experience, Cannabis Tours OC is a great resource. Feel free to blaze with your friends without having to worry about transportation, and enjoy your time between destinations on a spacious party bus. Cannabis Tours OC offers three distinct tour experiences: the Budz & Brews, Weed and Wine, and Growhouse & Dispensary tours running at $79, $89, and $99 per person, respectively.

    Find a Secret Sesh

If you know, you know. A secret sesh is a private cannabis event where prominent or local brands showcase and sell products. These events are usually very exclusive and often require knowing someone who can bring you in. That said, there’s always a chance of finding a secret sesh or similar private industry events with a bit of sleuthing online and through canna-centric social media circles.

    After Hours Private Events

Are you and some friends or colleagues looking for a fun place to hold a 420-friendly gathering or special event? Inquire with some bars and restaurants in Santa Ana. Some of them are open to holding private events after hours where cannabis consumption is permitted.

    Hit the Beaches

    Image

Both Huntington and Newport Beach are arguably the most accessible beaches in Orange County, but not necessarily the most 420-friendly. While cannabis consumption is prohibited at all public beaches in the state of California, there are several great smaller beaches in the Orange County area where you can find a chiller, quieter, and more intimate atmosphere.

    Seal Beach

If you happen to be in North Orange County, Seal Beach is a great ocean-side option, offering Huntington’s more traditional pier vibe but smaller and usually less crowded.

    Calafia

One of the best beaches in South Orange County, Calafia is adjacent to San Clemente State Beach, has an easily accessible parking lot nearby, and offers a more intimate scenic experience as it’s nestled under a beautiful cliffside.

    Pirate’s Cove

If you’re in the Newport area and looking for a good beach hangout, Pirate’s Cove is a small, calm beach west of Corona Del Mar, tucked below Lookout Point Park. It’s a great place to hang out, explore, and enjoy great ocean-side views.

    San Onofre

If you’re spending a lot of time in South Orange County, it may be worth your while to dip down to San Onofre, a large beach where you can watch the surfers and enjoy plenty of space to chill.

    Other Nature Spots

    Black Star Canyon

Orange County is home to many underrated hikes and nature trails. If nature is what you dig for your stoner’s outing, Black Star Canyon is one of the best places in the area to get your fix. The park has plenty of public trails for bikers and hikers, and still has remnants of the Black Star mining operation here and there.

    Little Corona, Newport Beach

If you’re looking for a “trippier,” fractal-zoom type nature or ocean experience to go with your buzz, check out the tide pools at Little Corona in Newport Beach. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to get lost in some strange, beautiful ocean life and take in some dank ocean scenery.

    Entertainment

Theme Parks Under the Influence – An OC Institution

    Image

When it comes to 420-centric experiences in Orange County, taking some edibles or hitting a quick vape or j before a trip to one of the area’s major theme parks is an institution and local right of passage all its own. If you’ve never been to Disneyland while high and feel like forking out the dough for a day park-hopper pass, now may be the time to bippity-boppity-blaze it.

Knott’s Berry Farm is a considerably more affordable and appropriately weirder option for those who like to experience a theme park with a stoney overlay. Parking and just getting into the park, in general, is much less of an ordeal than at Disneyland, which might make Knott’s a better option for a 420-friendly day filled with other activities.

    Museums

If you’re the type who likes to take in some dank art and culture, under the influence, in a calm setting, Orange County is home to a variety of under-the-radar art museums. Check out the Noguchi Museum, which houses world-famous sculptor Isamu Noguchi’s minimalist sculpture garden that represents the state of California. If you’re hanging out in South County, stop by the gorgeous grounds of the San Juan Capistrano Mission. For a more traditional but low-key and rewarding art museum experience, take a trip through the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.

    Santa Ana Art Walk

Speaking of Santa Ana: if you just so happen to be in the area on the first Saturday of the month, head downtown for the Art Walk. This community event includes an incredible variety of local art at various galleries downtown, as well as live performances, interactive street pieces, food trucks, local vendors, and local restaurants. Santa Ana is the cultural epicenter of Orange County with a strong sense of community and welcoming atmosphere — a recipe for a perfect cap to an OC stoner’s day out.

    Munchies

Orange County is home to several thriving food scenes in cities ranging from Santa Ana to Irvine. For the intents and purposes of this guide, we’ll narrow things down to a few select options that will appeal to the hungry 420-friendly crowd.

    Food Truck Meetups

Food trucks are a staple of any stoner’s diet, and Orange County has plenty of great ones to satisfy all your hazy cravings. Wanna save yourself the time and hassle of getting lost on your phone yelping local food trucks? There are several excellent food truck meetups in Orange County virtually every day of the week. Here’s a list of some of the main ones:

    • Home Depot Parking Lot – Cypress
      • 5800 Lincoln Ave
      • Tuesdays, 5pm – 9pm
    • The MET – Costa Mesa
      • 535 Anton Blvd
      • Every Day, Lunch hour
    • OC Great Parks – Irvine
      • 6950 Marine Way
      • Sundays, 9am – 1pm
    • Friday Night Munchies – Santa Ana
      • 420 W Central Ave
      • Fridays, 7pm – 11pm
    • Food Truck Thursday – Huntington Beach
      • 16242 Beach Blvd
      • Thursdays, 5:30pm – 9pm

    Tacos

No SoCal destination is worth its salt if you don’t know where to get good tacos. Here are three of the absolute best taco joints in Orange County:

    • Taqueria HOY! – Orange
      • 291 N Tustin St
    • Taco Mesa – Costa Mesa
      • 647 W 19th St
    • Taqueria El Zamorano – Santa Ana
      • 925 W Warner Ave

    4th Street Market, Santa Ana

Santa Ana has arguably become the foodie capital of Orange County in recent years. In addition to such fine institutions as Munchies Vegan Diner, Gus’s Fried Chicken, Lola Gaspar, and Wursthaus (all worth checking out any day), 4th Street Market is probably your best bet for satisfying everyone’s 420 palette. 4th Street Market is a mess-hall style showcase of an ever-evolving variety of local food, beverage, and dessert vendors and plenty of room for you to stand around in a stupor until you finally decide on what to indulge in.

    Medieval Times

Another staple of the Anaheim stoned-theme-park enthusiast, Buena Park’s Medieval Times is an infamous dinner-and-a-show joint with jousting, horsemanship, and falconry shows to go with a four-course meal. Medieval Times is a stone’s throw away from Knott’s Berry Farm, making it an ideal atmospheric and hilarious end to any theme park-focused 420 outing.

Don’t forget to secure your supply for a 420-friendly day in Orange County! Head over to the Grassdoor menu ASAP!

The 420-Friendly Guide to Exploring San Francisco

by Andy Andersen July 16, 2021

San Francisco has been and definitely continues to be one of the most 420-friendly towns in California.

After all, the country’s first-ever head shop opened up here in 1966, just as North Beach’s 1950s Beat Generation gave way to the Haight-Ashbury’s ‘67 Summer of Love. In the ‘80s, Brownie Mary baked and distributed cannabis-infused brownies to AIDS patients. A little over a decade later, the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club was largely responsible for getting Prop 215 (legalizing possession and cultivation of marijuana for medical use) passed in 1996. And while we may not have the biggest 420 celebration in the world (that honor goes to Denver), the term “4:20” did originate right across the bridge in San Rafael, which for sure gives us bragging rights.

All of that is to say that SF is a pretty sweet place to be a consumer of cannabis with an endless list of places to maximize consumption enjoyment. The city’s colorful houses, tree-lined streets, over 220 parks, and views at every turn is a mind-altering experience on its own. To help you narrow things down, here’s a helpful guide to having a 420-friendly day in San Francisco.

    Consumption Laws in San Francisco

When planning out and executing your 420 activities, keep in mind that public cannabis consumption is technically prohibited in the state of California, only allowed in private residences or privately-owned spaces permitted to host cannabis consumption.

When planning out your 420 activities, research and make sure you’re fully aware of what’s legal and what isn’t in localized areas.

Where to Buy Weed in San Francisco

Why wait for your weed in line at a dispensary when you can wait at home? Use Grassdoor and choose from the scheduled delivery menu, or peruse select products from the ASAP menu, which is delivered to your door in under an hour. Grassdoor carefully selects flower from an elite network of growers in California, including quality edibles and concentrates, as well as trusted vape brands.

Grassdoor takes orders between 9:30 am and 10 pm, and services select zip codes in Los Angeles and Orange County. Enter your address to see if you’re in the zone.

    Where to Consume

After you’ve stocked up and partaken, it’s time to head out and make the most of your high. As previously mentioned, always be aware of local laws and guidelines for consumption when planning out your activities.

    Image

    Parks and Nature Walks

    People-Watch in Dolores Park

This popular park along the western edge of the Mission is famous for many things: quality people-watching, near-constant sunshine, city views, long bathroom lines, and, for many years: the Truffle Man. Cannabis wasn’t legal at that time, but the Truffle Man realized that if there was one place people would definitely want to get high, it was Dolores Park. Luckily for him, Dolores Park is also known for being very laissez-faire about laws around alcohol and pot consumption, so every weekend for 11 years, the Truffle Man put his homemade pot-laced truffles in copper pots and walked the park selling his wares. He’s not around anymore (he decided to make it all legal), but the sentiment that made him such a popular fixture remains. If you haven’t already discovered this for yourself, give it a go. Good to know: Flour + Water Pizzeria’s to-go window and a quality ice cream shop are both within walking distance, a tip that needs no further explanation.

Play Disc Golf at Golden Gate Park

There is one place in Golden Gate Park where the smell of pot is constantly wafting through the air: the entrance of the Disc Golf Course on John F. Kennedy Drive (just west of Marx Meadow Drive). The 18-hole course winds through a heavily wooded area and is popular with “disc golfers” (that’s what the hardcore people call themselves) as well as people who “play disc golf” (the ones who are often digging for lost discs in the bushes). All are welcomed and it’s BYO discs.

    Listen to the Wave Organ

On an under-the-radar jetty in the Marina you’ll find an art installation that feels like it was conceived by someone who had just smoked a joint or twelve. The Wave Organ is a “wave-activated acoustic sculpture” made of 25 PVC organ pipes and concrete placed at different elevations that play a subtle sound based on the rise and fall of tides and the flow of the water. Once you get ensconced and really listen, you’ll hear the sounds of the sea in a completely new way as you take in views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Pro tip: It’s best to visit at high tide, no pun intended.

    Walk the Lands End Trail

Part of the magic of the stone labyrinth that sits on the edge of North America with views of the Golden Gate Bridge is that it’s literally off the beaten path and therefore not completely overrun with people looking for a photo opp. If you can go in the morning on a weekday (no one here is judging you for a Tuesday wake-and-bake session), you might have it all to yourself so you can walk it mindfully. To get there, you have to take the Lands End Trail, one of SF’s best urban hikes that winds along rugged cliffs above the ocean. Once you’re on the trail, look for signs for Mile Rock Beach (also worth a visit) and stay to your right. If we told you any more, we’d ruin half the fun.

Travel the World via a 55-Acre Nature Walk

Who knows if you’ll ever make it to the 7,000-foot-high slopes of Vulcán Zunil in Guatemala, but you can at least see the rarely collected Lobelia aguana shrub that grows there just by visiting the Mesoamerican Cloud Forest in the San Francisco Botanical Garden. The “living museum” is home to a plethora of gardens that are home to over 8,000 different plants from around the world, as well as plenty of lawns perfect for picnicking or just basking in the sun (if it decides to come out).

Hike Around the City’s Greatest Dog Park

Anywhere with dogs is pretty amazing for a 420-friendly outing. Add in a network of hiking trails, ocean views, dutch sand ladders that go down to a magnetic sand beach, hang gliders taking off from 200-foot cliffs, and the fact that those aforementioned puppers get to run around off-leash, and you’re in paradise. Fort Funston is SF’s most popular dog beach is a cold, foggy, windy paradise that used to house a harbor defense installation and multiple gun batteries (you can still see some of them). It’s worth noting that while the steep walk down to the beach is relatively easy, you will have to go back up again at some point.

    Activities and Installations

    Image

Go to Musée Mécanique for Antique Arcade Games.

Musée Mécanique is a San Francisco treasure that originally opened at Playland, the long-gone amusement park next to Ocean Beach, but was moved to Fisherman’s Wharf around 20 years ago. The incredibly creepy 6-foot-tall Laffing Sal automation made the trip and continues to scar children with a lifetime of coulrophobia. Also, adults. The museum has over 300 vintage games, including mechanical arm wrestling, pinball machines, peep shows, a disturbing amount of motorized execution scenes, and some rare historical artifacts from back in the day.

Say Hi to the Sea Lions at Pier 39

If you’re going to hit up Musée Mécanique, it would almost be disrespectful to not stop by and pay your respects to the sea lions who live at Pier 39’s K-Dock. When they’re not sunbathing, you’ll catch them sliding in and out of the water, frolicking with friends, and barking noisily, a delightfully comforting sound that would definitely be annoying if it came from anyone else.

Listen to a Sound Sculpture in the Dark

Audium is one of those experiences that has to be lived to be fully understood, but it’s basically a seated theatrical performance where you listen to “a sound-space continuum” in the dark. Ultimately, the fact that it’s hard to explain is exactly why it’s so amazing.

Feel Your Way Around the Tactile Dome

The Tactile Dome at the Exploratorium should be on everyone’s SF bucket list regardless of whether or not they smoke weed. It just happens to be really, really fun if you’re high. That’s because after you enter the completely dark tactile dome, you have to feel your way around twists and turns and textures in order to eventually make it out. Just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time as entries are timed. The rest of the Exploratorium is also a wonderland of hands-on exhibits that you can dig as much or as little into as you’d like.

    Munchies

Satisfy All of Your Cravings at the Ferry Building

The Ferry Building is a hub for the ferries that travel across the Bay, but you’re going because it also masquerades as a food hall where you can find every kind of mouth-watering sustenance you’re craving. Want a burger and fries? You’ll find some of the best in the city at Gott’s Roadside. In the mood for local oysters and one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches in town? Enjoy them while sitting by the water at Hog Island Oyster Co. You’ll also find wood-fired bagels, empanadas, artisan ice cream, all kinds of baked goods and other treats, cottonmouth-curing local beer, and plenty of goodies you can buy to enjoy at home.

Eat a Better ‘Crunchwrap Supreme’ at a Señor Sisig Food Truck

Even if you hate Taco Bell (but … why?), you’ll immediately become obsessed with Señor Sisig’s take on the stoner staple. It’s basically everything that a Crunchwrap is: cheese, shredded lettuce, sour cream and meat, layered in a crispy tortilla and wrapped in a grilled tortilla. The difference is 1) the quality of ingredients, and 2) the fact that instead of Taco Bell beef (which has a time and a place, but neither of those is right now), you can choose your meat option. Of course, the way to go is the pork tocino, but if you prefer it with chicken or even tofu, you can get that as well. It’s only available at the Filipino-American-Mexican fusion restaurant’s brick-and-mortar locations (the Mission and Oakland), but if you can only find one of the food trucks, you’re still going to be stoked about whatever you’re putting in your mouth.

Eat at Zeitgeist, SF’s Most Popular Beer Garden

Before every bar and restaurant in San Francisco was compelled to create outdoor seating, there was Zeitgeist, the city’s very popular bar/beer garden with cyclists. Despite the fact that there are now tons of outdoor eating and drinking options, Zeitgeist still rules the roost. Maybe it’s because of the quantity of beers on tap, or the classic Bloody Mary’s. Maybe it’s because of the cheap but delicious bar food, or the sunshine, or the infamous (said with love) doormen. Or maybe it’s just because Zeitgeist did it first and still does it better.

Everything you Need to Know about Cannabis Concentrates

by Andy Andersen July 7, 2021

Concentrates are now a cornerstone of the modern cannabis market, thanks to the wave of post-prohibition consumers who want precise dosing, easy application, and all-around greater access to the cannabis ingredients that do the most. Whether for direct consumption in tinctures and dabs, or as the central ingredient of cannabis edibles and topical products, concentrates come in an ever-increasing number of consistencies, product types, and intended uses.

    What are Cannabis Concentrates?

The word “concentrate” has evolved into a significant umbrella term for cannabis-derived substances in which cannabinoids, terpenes, and other desirable compounds have been extracted and collected (or concentrated), typically through the use of solvents or exposure to heat and pressure.

The Difference Between Concentrates, Extracts, and Oils

You may hear “concentrates,” “extracts,” and “oils” used interchangeably to describe a variety of cannabis products. “Oils” such as CBD oil, THC oil, hemp oil, hash or honey oil, and cannabis oil can broadly refer to both concentrates and extracts.

The difference between concentrates and extracts is subtle but important. An extract is a specific type of concentrate made using solvents, including butane, ethanol, propane, and supercritical CO2. In other words, extracts are a type of concentrate, but not all concentrates are extracts.

Making Sense of the Different Types of Concentrates

    Image

Concentrates are categorized by their appearance and consistency, which in turn depends on whether the concentrate was chemically extracted or made by physically separating the trichomes from the plant matter.

    Concentrate Consistencies

    • Kief or Dry Sift: Made by sieving the plant through a series of screens to break whole trichome glands off the plant.
    • Bubble Hash: Made by sieving the plant through a series of screens in ice and water to break trichomes off the plant, bubbles when smoked.
    • Rosin: Made by applying pressure and heat to the plant, with a consistency that depends on the temperature, time, and terpene content.

Extracts are made by essentially washing the plant matter through liquid solvents such as ethanol, carbon dioxide, propane, butane, and alcohol. Most tinctures, cannabis oils, and distillates are solvent-based extractions.

    Extract Consistencies

    • Shatter: An amorphous oleoresin with a glass-like consistency, high cannabinoid content ranging from 40-70%, and color ranging from bright yellow to dark amber.
    • Badder/Budder: Made from shatter by placing under heat and whipping, achieving a look and consistency similar to that of a cake fondant.
    • Crumble: Oil-covered THCa granules with a dry opaque consistency similar to that of honeycomb.

    Why Concentrates?

Think of a concentrate as an accumulation of everything you want to get out of the cannabis plant. The goal of any concentrate is to separate the plant matter from the trichomes, the tiny translucent structures that give buds their frosty, sticky coating. Trichomes contain all the cannabinoids and terpenes that give a cannabis plant its aroma, flavors, and most importantly, its effects. The idea is to remove all barriers between the user and the compounds that deliver the goods, which ultimately means it will take less product to achieve the desired effect.

    Benefits

Largely thanks to concentrates, we have more ways to consume and utilize the benefits of cannabis than ever. Concentrates are found in an ever-growing variety of forms and consistencies, which, combined with an expanding variety of consumption methods, only widens the dimensions of the cannabis experience.

High potency is one of the central benefits of concentrates over other forms of cannabis, whether you’re vaping THC oil, dabbing a wax or budder, or using a concentrate to make edibles. When vaporized in a cartridge or through a dab rig, concentrates also offer a similarly fast absorption rate and onset of effect to smoking flower, only without the necessity of combustion. Vaporized concentrates are also known to produce a clearer head-high (when THC-heavy) than smoked cannabis.

In the form of tinctures and oils, concentrates can easily be ingested instead of inhaled. Tinctures were a popular form of cannabis medicine before the 20th Century, but waned in relevance due to our inability to dose them precisely and achieve a consistent effect. Cannabis tinctures have found new relevancy in recent years as we have become better at extracting, isolating, and dosing the plant’s compounds.

    How to Consume Concentrates

    Image

In general, concentrates and extracts are exceptionally versatile. Many types of concentrates are fit for consumption on their own. Others can be added to food and beverages or infused into edibles. The onset, intensity, and duration of effects you experience from concentrates will depend largely on your chosen consumption method. What follows is a list of consumption methods, corresponding concentrate types, and what you can reasonably expect to feel from each.

    Dabbing

Dabbing involves vaporizing concentrates and inhaling them through a dab rig or e-rig. A dab rig is essentially a water pipe that’s typically smaller than a traditional bong. Dab rigs require some accessories and a bit of practice and technique to use, but they also offer unfettered access to a cocnentrate’s effects and terpene flavors.

A “dab” is a term that describes a dose of concentrate intended for dabbing with a rig or vaporizer. Concentrates most often used for dabbing include wax, badder, budder, shatter, sauce, sugar, and crystalline or diamonds. These concentrate types are basically all the same thing (except for crystalline, which is typically an isolated compound such as THC or CBD), differentiated primarily by their consistency.

    Vape Pens

Over the last decade, vape pens have arguably become the most popular form of adult-use concentrates, valued for their ease of use on the go, immediate onset, and relatively mild high compared to other consumption methods. A vape pen typically consists of a heating battery and a pre-filled vaporizer cartridge.

    Sublinguals

Outside of vaporizing, taking a tincture, oil, or spray under the tongue is the most direct way to absorb a concentrate. Most tinctures include a dropper that makes sublingual application and dosing easy. Effects typically set in around 30 to 45 minutes after absorption.

    Adding to Flower or Joint

Sprinkling kief over your bowl or lacing your joint with wax is a handy way to boost the potency of your flower. Expect a stronger and possibly longer duration of effects when doing so.

    Edibles

Whether made at home or ordered from a retailer, cannabis-infused edibles deliver the strong effects of concentrates without the need to inhale smoke or vapor. Edibles deliver effects at a delayed rate, and typically take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in. The duration of effect is also typically at least 1 to 2 hours.

You can also opt for adding a tincture or extract to your food or beverage, which will also result in a longer wait time for effects to kick in because the concentrate is going through your digestive tract instead of being absorbed sublingually.

What to Look for When Buying Concentrates

    Image

The first thing to do when shopping for concentrates is to be deliberate about what you’re using and why you’re using it. Take the above recommendations into consideration and try products/consumption methods that provide a dose and experience that meets your individual needs.

Always buy concentrates from companies that provide a certificate of analysis with every product. Certificates of analysis should come from an accredited third-party testing lab and verify that your concentrate delivers the advertised cannabinoid content and that the product is free of harmful substances and residual solvents.

One of the best ways to make sure you’re getting clean, quality concentrate is to seek out trusted, licensed dispensaries and delivery services to order from. The Grassdoor team comprises engaged cannabis connoisseurs and experts who go to great lengths to ensure the Grassdoor concentrate menu is 100% compliant, high-quality products. We also test every vape cartridge and pen to make sure we’re delivering the best of the best.

    Proper Storage Matters

One final note: properly storing your concentrates can go a long way in preserving the product’s potency and longevity; minimizing environmental radicals like heat, air, and excessive moisture preventing premature degradation. Store your concentrates in a cool, dark place whenever possible. Room temperature is sufficient for shorter-term storage, especially if you are minimizing exposure to light. Silicone jars are often used to store concentrates because they are typically easy to open, but they don’t offer airtight protection. For long-term storage, try to use an airtight glass jar whenever possible.

Everything You Need to Know About Cannabis Edibles

by Andy Andersen June 25, 2021

Cannabis-infused foods and beverages have taken the legal cannabis market by storm. Valued for their potency and, more often in recent years, for delivering precious cannabinoids to your system without the necessity of smoke or vapor; edibles come in an ever-evolving variety of gummies, baked goods, chocolates, oils, and other infused products. As is the case with all forms of cannabis, it’s essential to understand how different edibles are made and what type of effects they can have before you consume them.

Here’s a quick, comprehensive, user-friendly guide to edibles: their benefits, differences from other cannabis products, how to dose them properly, and what to expect from an edible high.

    What Are Edibles?

In a cannabis context, edibles are ingestible items infused with cannabis compounds, usually in the form of cannabis oil or butter. Though arguably thought of as a modern tradition of cannabis consumption, cannabis-infused foods and drinks have been around for ages. Dating as far back as 10th Century India, ground cannabis was a primary ingredient of Bhang, a traditional drink made with spices, butter, and milk. Throughout world history, edibles have popped up in various forms, most of which we still approximate in the edibles market today.

Throughout the 20th century, edibles in America were largely confined to homemade pot brownies and other baked goods, typically known for high doses of cannabinoids and powerful effects. In the post-legalization era, the budding cannabis industry has all but revamped the edible tradition to include an expanding variety of products with precise and more manageable dosing.

    How Edibles Work

Understanding how edibles work (and why they can be so potent) means understanding the process of decarboxylation. When cannabinoids are exposed to air and/or heat, either through natural aging or other environmental factors, they drop a carboxyl group in their chemical makeup. This process enables them to fit your body’s cannabinoid receptors. For example, when you smoke flower, the combustion decarboxylates THCA into THC, the active molecule that triggers euphoric, intoxicating, and alleviating effects.

Edibles are usually infused with cooked cannabis oil or butter that contains active cannabinoids. As decarboxylated (or “decarbed”) cannabinoids are digested, you’ll typically have a delayed, albeit more potent reaction. When your liver metabolizes delta-9-THC, it converts it into 11-hydroxy-THC, which has been shown to have a more powerful and longer duration of effect.

    Types of Edibles

    Image

Though edible cannabis products and product types continue to evolve, most edibles fit into one of the following categories:

    • Gummies
    • Chocolate
    • Brownies & Cookies
    • Capsules & Tablets
    • Beverages

Ultimately, which type of edible you choose is a matter of personal preference. Beverages may kick in slightly faster than baked goods, but seldom deliver on the same potency level. Gummies are popular for ease of use and small-dose accessibility. Capsules and tablets may be an optimal, no-frills option for those taking cannabis strictly for medicinal purposes. The type of edible you choose will largely depend on what you’re using it for and what’s easiest to integrate into your day.

    The Benefits of Edibles

In today’s market, edibles are widely sought after because you can consume cannabis and feel the plant’s effects without having to smoke or vape. Dosing consistency is the other main benefit. Thanks to the advent of legalization, edibles now offer consistent, reliable doses that make it easier to consume with a reasonable level of certainty about how you’re going to feel.

When experimenting with edibles, however, always keep in mind that a certain amount of trial and error is involved to figure out how a specific edible will affect you. Everyone’s body reacts to cannabis differently, and every cannabis product has its own effect profile. The active cannabinoids in edibles go through your digestive system before they enter your bloodstream, which means effects come on slowly until they peak. The strength and duration of the peak will depend on several personal factors, including your age, weight, and genetic makeup.

What to Look For When Buying Edibles

If you purchase unregulated or counterfeit weed edibles, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get the effects you’re seeking. You may end up disappointed to feel nothing or get a far higher potency than you bargained for. Some high-powered, homemade edibles can produce heavy psychoactive effects that last for days. That’s why the best way to shop for edibles is to seek out verified brands and properly dosed products from licensed dispensaries. Seek out edibles from companies that provide a certificate of analysis from an accredited third-party lab for every product.

For Quality Assurance, Go with Delivery

One of the best ways to make sure you’re getting a clean, consistently dosed edible is to seek out trusted delivery services from which to order. The Grassdoor team comprises engaged cannabis connoisseurs and experts who go to great lengths to ensure the Grassdoor edible menu includes only 100% compliant, high-quality products.

    Make Your Own

If knowing exactly what’s going into your edibles is your top priority, your best bet may be making your own edibles with homemade cannabutter. There are several viable ways to make weed edibles, but cannabutter is typically the easiest method for first-timers or relative newcomers. All you really need for ingredients is a cup of butter and a cup of decarbed cannabis.

    • Step 1: Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of butter into a saucepan. Simmer on low until the butter is melted.
    • Step 2: Add your ground, decarbed cannabis to the pan as the butter melts. Periodically stir and continue to simmer the mixture for 2-3 hours.
    • Step 3: Line a funnel with a cheesecloth, and strain your mixture through the funnel into a jar. Refrigerate your jar of cannabutter overnight.

    How to Consume Edibles

Whether you’re trying edibles for the first time or a cannabis veteran who’s simply trying a new type of edible, there are steps you can take to increase your chances of having a positive experience.

The first thing to do is shop for products that are easy to dose. Most regulated gummies, chocolates, capsules, and tablets on the market today offer consistent, low-THC doses per piece. If you’re consuming a THC edible, start with a product that includes no more than 5 mg per piece, preferable 2 mg or less if you’re brand new to edibles. Then you can slowly increase your dosage over time until you’ve landed on something that works for you. If you’re taking a CBD edible, even high doses are generally considered safe for most people. 10-20mg of CBD is a perfectly suitable starter dose.

    Image

You’ve probably heard the saying “you can always take more but you can’t take less” in reference to edibles. Some edibles can only take 20 minutes to kick in, though 1 to 2 hours is the more common minimum delay time. After consuming an edible, always wait at least 2 and up to 24 hours before you take more.

Most of the unpleasant effects people experience from edibles come from high doses of THC. If you’re worried about experiencing paranoia, anxiety, excessive sedation, and other potentially adverse high-THC effects, try edibles that include both THC and CBD. Though everyone’s body absorbs and reacts to both THC and CBD differently, CBD has shown a lot of potential in minimizing the potentially uncomfortable psychoactive responses associated with THC.

    What to Expect

As previously mentioned, edibles deliver effects at a delayed rate, and typically take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in. The duration of effect is generally at least 1 to 2 hours, though high doses can last anywhere from 4 to 16 hours.

If you’re taking edibles that include CBD only, expect nothing more than a mild calm as far as psychoactivity is concerned. THC edibles genuinely elicit a strong head-buzz and often a potent, heavy body high after a slow, steady onset. Light to heavy sedation is also a possibility, especially after your high has peaked. Again, the key thing to remember is that everyone reacts to edibles differently, and every product brings with it a unique experience. Get to know your body and how it responds to products you’re interested in, and always err on the side of caution when breaking into the edible weed world.
