Located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, just south of Oakland, San Leandro has had a storied history in Alameda County. The city is located on top of the Hayward Fault. Consequently, earthquakes are a common occurrence. San Leandro was the county seat in Alameda until a 6.3 magnitude earthquake leveled the courthouse in 1868. The county seat then moved to Oakland. Before the civil rights movement and ensuing reforms, San Leandro was a segregated city with a majority white, non-Hispanic population. African Americans, Hispanics, and other minorities were systematically prevented from purchasing homes within the San Leandro city limits. Today, the city welcomes people of all races and ethnicities. The 2010 census showed that more than three-quarters of the population identify as Native American, non-white Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, or African American. The local government is now dedicated to continuing equity and inclusion reforms.

San Leandro’s cannabis ordinance allowed the city’s three medical marijuana dispensaries to convert to recreational dispensaries in 2019, and there are no plans to allow more dispensaries to open in city limits. Two dispensaries are currently still operating in the city.
