Cannabis Pre-Rolls

About Pre-Rolls

Pre-rolled joints are an excellent, convenient way to consume cannabis, providing users with easy access to a variety of strains at low costs. Once the need was discovered for mitigating the rolling process for smokable cannabis, along with the further legalization of cannabis throughout the states, dispensaries started selling ready-to-smoke joints. At their simplest, pre-rolls are smoking orifices made of ground cannabis, rolling papers, and a filter tip.

Benefits of Pre-Rolls

Pre-rolls are notorious for their low-maintenance nature, as they don’t require any of the time or accessories required to roll your own joint. You can leave the grinder, rolling papers, filters, packing tools, tray, and flower at home - the dispensaries have eliminated that hassle for you. This benefit also lends itself to the high portability of pre-rolls, as all else you need is a lighter to get things going, both of which fit right in your purse or pocket.

Another benefit of pre-rolls is their ease of use, making them great for beginner smokers, occasional smokers, or medical users. If you are new to smoking, you might not have the art of rolling down pat quite yet or have even acquired the necessary tools to get started. Additionally, the highs are very manageable if you have a lower tolerance, as you can take as many puffs as you’d like, and can easily save the rest for later. If you smoke occasionally, the same might be true, and you only break out the green during social gatherings or after a long week of work. Likewise, this can prove especially beneficial for medical users with significant ailments, as some patients find rolling joints on their own to be complicated, and more trouble than it’s worth.

Furthermore, pre-rolls have come a long way since their earlier days of being a “mystery mix” of dispensary’s leftover flower. The demand for higher quality pre-rolled joints has skyrocketed in recent years, as has the education with strain varieties. Users are looking for more and more accessibility to premium cannabis flowers, and experiencing the range of effects each strain has, versus the feelings of just being “high”. Now that the world of legal cannabis is continuing to open its doors, smokers no longer have to settle for what they can get, and being able to spend little money to sample various types of flower is a huge benefit!

Pre-Roll FAQs

How do you know if a pre-roll is good?

Similar to understanding what strains of flower are better than others, there are methods to determine which pre-roll is best for what experience you are looking for. A great place to start would be by acknowledging these preferences, as the effects of different strains can vary from person to person. Identifying your internal and fiscal intentions primarily will set you up for finding your perfect pre-roll. Especially when there are so many options these days to choose from, going in with some sort of idea as your foundation when making a selection is our top recommendation. That said, one of the biggest benefits to pre-rolls overall is their variability - even going into the buying process of pre-rolls with a flexible intention to try something new is a great way to go!

Another best practice we recommend is to keep an eye out for packaging. Luckily, with the increased demand for high-quality pre-rolls, their packaging has only increased in the explicit content description. You will always know what strain is inside, how much THC and/or CBD is in it, and how many grams are packed in. Also, take note of the physical packaging, as you want to make sure you are purchasing a pre-roll in an air-tight container, preserving the flower inside. Faulty packaging that allows the pre-roll to be exposed to air will result in a dry product that will not smoke as well and could lead to a sore throat or a joint that burns entirely too quickly.

How are pre-rolls made?

If you’ve ever rolled your own joint, or been present for someone else’s rolling process, you already have a general idea of how dispensaries make their sellable pre-rolls. For most pre-rolls, they are individually packed with pre-ground cannabis flower and rolled by a machine (for mass production) to ensure consistency and a smooth, smokable product. Some dispensaries utilize specific rolling papers, sometimes cones, or tobacco blunt wraps. On the other hand, some of the most premium pre-rolls are created one by one. For example, there are pre-rolls wrapped in 24k gold leaf containing grade-A flower sprinkled with concentrates. These types of designer pre-rolls are most often individually wrapped to ensure delicacy is taken with such high-grade products.

What’s in a pre-roll?

Pre-rolls can be filled with any kind of ground cannabis flower, so users can shop along with their personal preferences. As mentioned earlier, some pre-rolls can be juiced up with added concentrates, or blended with more than one strain. The most common contents of pre-rolls are as follows:

  • Bud - Otherwise known as “flower” or “nug”, the bud of the cannabis plant is what houses the beautiful aromas and flavors all users are familiar with. Along with these sensations come the psychoactive ingredients of the plant, namely THC.
  • Shake - Shake is jargon for the bits and pieces of bud that fall off during the packaging and harvesting process of bigger plants. Shake can be associated with lower quality products, as it can sometimes be a bit older or dried out than its bud counterparts, even if it is from the same strain. That said, if you’re fine compromising a heavier high for a lower price, many shake-dominant pre-rolls are less expensive.
  • Trim - Considering shake as the “leftovers” of the primed cannabis plants during production, trim is the remnants on the tupperware. There’s a very little bud in trim pre-rolls, as it usually consists of miscellaneous plant matter such as seeds, stems, and leaves. This debris is also often lower in THC content, so the effects will almost certainly be low to moderate.
